We are concerned about the current design of the intersection of Rothesay Street and Chief Peguis Trail, from which a split-grade intersection (whereby CPT would cross Rothesay below-grade, unobtrusively and uninterrupted by traffic lights), which was in the plan for many years, has recently been removed by the City of Winnipeg in order to mitigate rising construction costs. Our primary concern is the safety of a high-volume of pedestrian and bicycle traffic at the proposed at-grade intersection. It is our understanding that in the future the CPT Extension will become a part of an inner city high speed transportation corridor designed to handle large volumes of both residential and commercial traffic. This includes both an estimated 1,000 trucks that presently travel along Springfield Road on a daily basis as well those anticipated when this extension is eventually linked into larger commercial transportation hubs such as Symmington Yards. We also understand that the speed limit will likely increase from 80km to 110km per hour in the future, compounding our concerns. Unlike other city projects, the Chief Peguis Trail Extension is unique in that it cuts through a densely populated residential area on a narrow tract of land, leaving little in the way of a buffer area. The original design for this project took this into consideration, but the current design does not.
